The original printmaker George Gascoyne specialised in depicting horses in both imaginary and realistic situations. A full member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers throughout the 1920's, George Gascoyne appears to have produced only a very limited number of works and the scarcity of these accomplished etchings and drypoints implies that few were ever published in formal editions. An able draughtsman with a particular talent for capturing even the slightest characteristic gesture of the horse, George Gascoyne took many of this subjects from the countryside immediately surrounding his home in the Regency town of Tunbridge Wells.
