The Clipped Wing was Lionel Lindsay’s first wood engraving produced upon his return to Australia in 1930, at a time of increasing depression for the art market worldwide. In this cut Lionel Lindsay attempted, with the utmost simplicity, to give form and texture to his subject whilst at the same time expressing the utter dejection of a bird deprived of liberty and flight. He had found this bird in a zoo, too forlorn and miserable to be removed from the stump on which it sat. To Lionel Lindsay this pitiful specimen seemed emblematic of the times.
Provenance: the collection of Sir Michael Sadler.
On fine laid paper, with full margins and deckle edge. Very good original condition. |
