Very strong, crisp impression from the edition printed by T. Palser in 1821.
John Hamilton Mortimer’s exceptional draughtsmanship is rarely better illustrated than in his imaginative banditti subjects. Banditti was the subject matter which became most closely associated with J.H.Mortimer’s work during the 1770’s and as a direct consequence his name became linked with that of Salvator Rosa, earning him the epithet “The Salvator Rosa of Sussex”. Etched with the bold vigour which is a hallmark of John Hamilton Mortimer’s work, Banditti taking his Post achieves a sense of perspective which is also testament to his particular skill in printmaking techniques. This etching is one the group of works which Mortimer dedicated to Sir Joshua Reynolds upon publication in December 1778.
On warm white wove paper, watermarked 1821, with full margins and deckle edge. Faint pencil sketch by a competent hand of a face in profile, verso. Very good original condition. |
