Original Laura Knight aquatint.

Superb impression with rich black inking and strong contrast, from the only edition of 20 signed and numbered proofs (there were also 5 trial impressions). This outstanding proof impression is signed by Laura Knight with her rarely used ‘frivolous’ signature (B&W.4).

Circus Dressing Room is the most impressive and one of the largest of Laura Knight’s ‘behind the scenes’ circus prints. The bohemian world of the circus was the overiding inspiration for Laura Knight’s most famous works. She absorbed herself completely in the world of the performers, touring with their troupe until they grew completely accustomed to her continuous presence. This proximity allowed her to capture the unselfconscious moments of life backstage with an unobtrusive intimacy shown at its finest in her aquatint masterpiece Circus Dressing Room.

Laura Knight was already established as a leading British painter by the time she began printmaking. Consequently, her style was already fully formed and her bold modern approach, exemplified in this aquatint, is unmistakable throughout her printed work. It is for her dressing room scenes, such as this, that Dame Laura Knight is now especially famous.

On cream laid paper, watermarked David Strang, with full margins and deckle edge. Very good original condition.
