Original Francis Seymour Haden etching with drypoint.

Rare pencil signed proof impression prior to publication in The Portfolio. One of only 25 impressions prepared in this way.

Exceptionally good early proof impression of the freshly completed plate. In this beautifully printed impression the fresh drypoint burr is pronounced and the bending figure near the prow of the barge (normally obscured by the heavily printed shadows nearby) is clearly visible. Schneiderman quotes "The trials proofs with the white sail and 25 of the published state with the dark signed by Mr.Haden and taken before the plate was given to the portfolio are alone good." (R.S. Schneiderman, A Catalogue Raisonne of the Prints of Sir Francis Seymour Haden, p.277)

This plate was etched directly by Francis Seymour Haden from nature by moonlight at Deptford on the River Thames. The full moon can be seen in the sky, appearing from behind a cloud, above the stern of the anchored brig.

On antique laid paper of a completely different nature to the paper used for The Portfolio printings, with margins. Generally very good original conidition.
