Exceptionally strong working proof impression with pronounced etched line - from the artist’s personal collection. This etching was never released in any form of published edition, the entire proof printing having remained in the artist’s studio until acquired by Campbell Fine Art.
In this unusual etching Ernest Eric Newton has contrasted the modern industrial world with the rustic beauty of old - a train speeds across the linear symmetry of a viaduct, whilst in the foreground a tumbled group of headstones and an ancient chapel are set amongst the soft forms of trees in full leaf. E.E.Newton worked at times with F.L. Griggs at Chipping Campden and it appears that he shared Griggs's dislike of the advance of modern construction at the expense of rustic ancient England.
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. |
