Outstanding early impression of the freshly completed plate, prior to the closed letter title.

A truly superb example with the title in open capitals, as first issued on 1st February 1807.

This splendid self-portrait is believed to have been painted around 1779-82, thus showing Wright aged between 45 and 48. James Ward’s mezzotint is a masterly translation, handled with consummate skill befitting the supremely talented painter it portrays.

Apparently a full sheet, with good margins visible beyond the platemark on all sides. Sealed, undisturbed in a fine ‘Hogarth’ frame with label verso “Print & frame in 1902 for £5-12-6. WA.” a considerable sum for any picture at that time.

Very fine original condition (not inspected out of frame). Image surface excellent.
