The Ubley bus ran from Bristol to the village of Ubley in the Chew Valley at the foot of the Mendip Hills, to the south west of Bristol. Alexander Heaney’s etching depicts the main departure bus-stop outside an hotel with a public bar. The bus started from Prince Street in Bristol and the design of the remaining older buildings there today appears to confirm this as the location of Heaney’s image.
Alexander Heaney was a keen observer for the posture of people whether at rest or in movement and he could characterize his figures with a few swift strokes of the needle. Every nuance of the figures is wonderfully conveyed in this image as friends and relatives bid farewell whilst the baggage handlers load their luggage on to the bus from which this etching derives its title.
Alexander Heaney exhibited an impression of this etching at the Bristol Savages Club in 1923. An impression is held in the collection of Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, reference M4312.
On cream simile Japan paper with margins. Time toned within mat window area, otherwise very good original condition (one wormhole in outer margin).
