A particularly beautiful and carefully inked impression. Signed proof from the only edition of 275 proofs for the United Kingdom and 175 for America.
Walcot’s initial training as an architect was to prove invaluable when he turned his hand to art. His superb topographical scenes, such as this view of Ludgate Circus with Ludgate Hill and St. Paul's Cathedral beyond, combine an exceptional architectural accuracy with an impressionistic representation of the busy streets.
Walcot had a remarkable ability to convey a vivacious realism to the atmosphere of his scenes using a fineness of touch which is distinct to his work. With the exception of the railway bridge at the centre of the scene, Ludgate Circus looks much the same today, though rarely has this view been better captured than in this superb print.
On cream wove paper with wide margins. Some time tone in outer margins and faint suggestion of foxing in left margin of sheet, otherwise very good original condition. |
