Original Kenneth Steel line engraving and drypoint.
A particularly clear impression of this exceptionally fine plate of Edinburgh.
An early printing prior to further drypoint work in the sky and before the smoke was added to the highest near chimney on the left side of the street. This impression has been wiped with particular care to enhance the light in the upper sky area and across the castle itself in order to create greater contrast across the image when printed. A very fine signed proof impression – the only published edition consisted of 60 impressions issued by The Fine Art Society Ltd. in 1937.
Kenneth Steel chose an impression of this imposing work as his exhibition piece at the R.B.A. in 1937.
On cream wove paper with margins. Faint mat line in outer margins, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent. |
