Very good signed proof impression of this fine figure study which is characteristic of Hans Thoma's style .
Hans Thoma excelled especially at the depiction of the male figure, and it was his practice to choose the classical figures of saints or shepherds garbed only in a loin skin as the subject of many of his works. After his meeting with Arnold Böcklin, Hans Thoma’s work became more symbolic in its content; however, even in this naturalistic study, it is easy to see why his work is associated with that of the Symbolists.
On very heavy cream laid paper with full margins, as issued. Very minor foxing in outer margin of sheet, otherwise generally very good original condition. |
