Outstanding signed proof impression from the artist’s own private collection, aside from the normal edition. An exceptionally rich impression printed with plate tone, unlike the published edition for which impressions almost clean wiped.

Although first declared in Fine Prints of the Year 1931 and dated that year in the plate, The Flight from Eden was not published or fully reviewed until the following year, when it was released as the pair to The Fruit of the Tree. Like its companion piece, this work was received favourably by Malcolm Salaman in Fine Prints of the Year 1932 (p.9), but in this instance it was the etching of the attendant animals which received special praise. In his approach to depicting Adam and Eve, C.F.Tunnicliffe was much influenced by the monumental classical nudes of William E.C.Morgan (an engraver whose work he much admired) and it is clear from the artist’s own notes that he was especially proud of the result which he achieved in this elaborate and sculpturesque work.

Provenance: the artist’s own private collection; thence by descent.

On cream laid paper, watermarked F. J. Head & Co, with full margins. Very fine condition.
