Original J.R.G. Exley etching.

Outstanding proof impression, printed with tone, dedicated in pencil by J.R.G. Exley to fellow artist and printmaker Robert Sargent Austin.

J.R.G. Exley established a particular reputation for his skilful and carefully observed etchings of birds. His ability to capture both their form and texture is well illustrated by Wild Drakes and is the direct result of his scrupulously neat etching technique. The fine gradation of shade across the basket in this image demonstrates the artist’s exceptionally controlled use of the etched line and does not rely upon the graded application of ink in printing.

Provenance: Collection of the artist and printmaker Robert Sargent Austin, thence by descent to Rachel Austin, one of the artist’s two daughters.

On pale cream laid paper with full margins. Very good original condition.
