Water’s Meadow, Stratford-sub-Castle, Wiltshire by David Charles Read

Water’s Meadow, Stratford-sub-Castle, Wiltshire

Original etching with touches of drypoint.
Ref:  R.W. Read (1874 catalogue in B.M.) 211
S 165 x 267 mm; P & I 150 x 251 mm
Excellent presentation proof impression given by the artist to the Earl of Pembroke. A particularly fine example of Read’s charming landscape studies, sketched by the artist directly on to the plate.

This etching is the archetypal D.C. Read landscape, showing a quiet, naturalistic view of the area known as Water’s Meadow at Stratford-sub-Castle in Wiltshire, not far from D.C.Read’s home town of Salisbury.

On cream wove paper, with margins. Tipped at corners to original backing sheet, as prepared by the artist himself. Generally very good original condition.
