Original James Clarke Hook etching.
Excellent impression with strong etched line, from the only published edition, as issued in 1865 by the Etching Club.
James Clarke Hook’s highly finished etchings of genre subjects are some of the finest examples of popular Victorian art to emerge from the Etching Club. Gathering Eggs demonstrates perfectly J.C.Hook’s marvellous period style and is one of the relatively few original etchings to have been produced by this highly talented artist. The painterly nature of this elaborate etching reflects J.C.Hook’s ability as a painter in oils – he was one of the most successful artists of his generation, perfecting a manner which combines overtones of Pre-Raphaelite art with scenes of everyday life which now typify the Victorian era.
On fine white India paper applied to original cream wove backing sheet, with full margins as issued. Very fine condition. Image surface excellent. |
