Bruce’s stone commemorates the victory of King Robert the Bruce of Scotland over the English at Glen Trool, Galloway, in April 1307. After his return from exile, living as a fugitive, Robert the Bruce achieved his first success here at Glen Trool, where his force of only around 300 men ambushed and defeated around 1,500 English soldiers, forcing them to turn and run. It proved to be a great propaganda victory and brought Robert the Bruce an ever-growing number of supporters.
This is one of eleven wood engravings which were commissioned from George Mackley by The Forestry Commission.
On smooth cream wove paper, with full margins. Excellent original condition.
Provenance: The retrospective show on Geroge Mackey’s wood engravings staged by Blond Fine Art in London in 1995. |
