Original Charles Holroyd etching.
Beautiful impression, printed in brown ink with delicate plate tone.
Scarce. Inscribed by Frederick Wedmore, the well-known connoisseur and writer on art, “No.15. To William Ardley - My private plate - 33 impressions only - "Borghese: Pines". F. Wedmore.” (Wedmore had bought the plate from the artist).
Charles Holroyd was a great lover of Italy, and his art is at its most tranquil in natural wooded landscapes of this sort. This etching is of a more personal nature than the majority of his work which was dominated by the influence of William Strang but still shows overtones of Alphonse Legros, by whom Charles Holroyd had been taught at the Slade School of Art.
On heavy wove cream paper watermarked PM, with wide margins. Very good condition, minor surface dirt verso. |
