Original Francis Seymour Haden etching.
Superb early working proof impression prior to the removal of the title and signature, before the complete alteration of the figures at the lower right and before the plate was cut down. A very strong printing of the pure etched work. Rare.
This scene shows a view in Essex, near the mouth of the Thames, where the waters are tidal. In the foreground there are two fishermen seen mending their nets. To the left is the Inn from which the plate takes its title. This excellent early proof impression of The Inn, Purfleet is an outstanding example of the radically new style of open, naturalistic etching which Francis Seymour Haden was to introduce to original printmaking in this country.
On heavy wove paper with margins. Very fine condition. |
