The accomplished etchings of the American printmaker Clifford Isaac Addams rank amongst some of the most impressive and atmospheric etched works by any of Whistler’s followers. This rare early plate by Clifford Addams is inscribed in the image “élève de Whistler” and dated “1902 / 1920 / 1924”. Clifford Addams included a small portrait of himself as a young man at the lower left corner of this image (only two other self-portraits of Clifford Addams are known, dating from 1927 and 1934 respectively).
Admiral’s House, Amsterdam is the earliest known original plate by Clifford Addams. Begun in 1902, it is further dated 1920 to indicate the year in which Clifford Addams resumed his work on the plate upon his return to America and 1924 to indicate the date of issue for exhibition. It remains one of the most Whistlerian of all of Clifford Addams’ etchings and is inscribed “élève de Whistler” (pupil of Whistler) in the plate in homage to the ‘Master’.
On fine simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. Some spotting in margins, otherwise very good original condition. |
