Very fine signed proof impression from the only edition of 50 signed and numbered proofs.
This splendid open harbour scene, with its reflections and shadows spread out across the water of the foreground, anticipates James McBey’s great Venetian works of the mid-1920’s. Although etched in 1913, this plate was not published until March 1915 when the entire proceeds of the sale of the 50 proofs were given by artist and publishers jointly to War charities.
A beautiful impression of this tranquil marine subject, printed with a delicate suggestion of plate tone.
On antique cream laid paper watermarked EVH with margins (narrow at base). Mild time tone in mat window area, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent. |
