Rare pencil signed proof impression on large paper, as released in the special proof edition of the very scarce 1879 Etching Club portfolio.
Superb impression of one of John Everett Millais’s most charming etchings. An exceptionally clear impression, beautifully printed to enhance the contrast between the strong foreground etching and the delicate detail of the distant view.
The rarest of all of John Everett Millais’s etched works, A Penny for her Thoughts is considered to be the finest etched example of the artist’s later style. This beautiful study of a solitary Victorian lady in introspective mood, reflects a style which came into vogue around the late 1870’s – a style which was also embraced by Tissot. This remains the most sought-after of all of John Everett Millais’s original etchings.
On soft simile Japan paper, with wide margins. Very fine condition. |
