Original Hedley Fitton etching.

Excellent signed proof impression from the only edition. This large original etching is a superb example of Hedley Fitton’s intricate and heavily worked architectural etchings.

This impressive etched work shows the entrance to the extraordinary Eglise Monolithe at St. Emilion in the heart of the famous winegrowing region of the same name. The largest sanctuary in France to be carved from a single block of solid rock, this remarkable underground church is unique in its construction. The eighth century hermit, Emilion carved out a cave for himself here in the limestone, and in the ninth century his disciples literally sank the church into the rock. The subterranean church was subsequently surmounted by a 12th century chapel and belfry. In Hedley Fitton’s etching, the entrance to the church can be seen to descend as a steep tunnel, heading downwards into the rock beyond the elaborately carved portal.

On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Generally very fine original condition. Image surface excellent.
