The complete set of 11 proofs, each signed by William Strang and by the master printer Frederick Goulding. One of only 55 sets printed, numbered and signed by both the artist and his printer. From the collection of the etcher J.P. Heseltine.
A truly superb set of outstanding proof impressions. Frederick Goulding was the foremost printer of the time and the impressions which he has produced from William Strang’s fine plates, whatever their engraved technique, are all of the highest quality.
This set of prints provides an inclusive view of both William Strang’s techniques and his distinctive style. William Strang produced one of the most significant bodies of original etched work by any Scottish artist of the period. Sometimes symbolic and often dour to the point of being macabre, his work is distinguished by a sense of realism, its solid compositions and its confident handling. Noted for its technical excellence, William Strang’s work has always been admired by both artists and critics alike; it continues to be amongst the most sought after of all Scottish original prints.
Each print is in excellent original condition, presented in its original mount, hinged into a bound folio, as issued. Entitled The Earth Fiend, a Ballad made and etched by William Strang, published for the artist by Elkin Mathews & John Lane, London in 1892.
