Samuel Palmer studied the sky of this “tiny masterpiece” after completing his first etching of The Willow and the resulting development is clearly apparent in the style of Samuel Palmer’s subsequent and most famous etchings.

Thomas Creswick was one of the most highly acclaimed and successful of the Victorian landscape painters, and was also one of the leading early members of the Etching Club. It is his marvellous treatment of light which gives his etchings their enchanting qualities. Indeed, it was to Thomas Creswick’s masterly etchings that Samuel Palmer turned, in order to develop the depiction of light in his own etched works. [more]
