Norman Janes studied with Tonks at the Slade School, whilst learning the arts of etching and engraving from William Palmer Robins through evening classes at the Central School of Art. Subsequently, he studied all aspects of printmaking under Sir Frank Short and Malcolm Osborne at the Royal College of Art. A fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (R.E.), he produced over 40 plates, and although his activities as a printmaker reduced after 1940, he continued his interest in printmaking, serving as Honorary Secretary to the R.E. from 1945 until 1962.
Norman Janes’s early work had been much occupied with portraiture but by the later 1920’s landscape had become his predominant subject matter.
