John Nicolson is especially noted for his fine drypoint scenes of the Scottish highlands. John Nicolson had trained in printmaking together with Edmund Blampied at the London County Council School of Art at Bolt Court and both artists remained close friends throughout their lives. His drypoint technique shows considerable similarity to that of Blampied’s, although his highland landscapes are somewhat reminiscent of the work of the work of D.Y. Cameron. Evening, Loch Lomond possess an enchanting solitary air which captures the tranquil beauty of this highland loch as the daylight begins to fade towards night.
