Excellent impression from the edition published by Goupil & Co in 1919. This edition was limited to 60 proofs of this etching and was the final printing of this plate and its four companions before they were presented to the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
After the Dutch artist Matthijs Maris moved to London in 1877 he began to develop a distinct and individual vein of mystic symbolism in his art – it is his works of this nature which are now his most highly prized creations.
Landscape with Goat is one of five original etchings by Matthijs Maris created in the mid 1880’s, considered to be the most important of his etched works. Very few impressions indeed were printed at the time of the creation of these plates – this edition printed by Goupil is the only formal published issue of this etching.
Provenance: T. & R. Annan & Sons, Glasgow, circa 1920.
On soft simile Japan paper with full margins. Very fine original condition. |
