Original Muirhead Bone drypoint.

The outstanding masterpiece of Bone’s later drypoint work.

Superb impression with exceptionally rich drypoint burr. From the only edition of 80 signed proofs in the completed state of the plate (93 in all).

Acknowledged as one of the greatest drypoints to have been created during the final years of the British Etching Revival, the completed plate of Windy Night, Stockholm was the result of fourteen successive states of development – four of which were spent on the preliminary plate entitled Study for Windy Night, Stockholm, a mirror-image of the present work. The result is one of the most successful of the many splendid plates which resulted from Bone’s travels to Europe and is undoubtedly one of the artist’s most atmospheric printed works.

The technique of drypoint, with its rich velvety blacks, is perfectly suited to nocturnal views and here, Bone has used it to full effect, creating a dramatic image of lasting power. In the foreground fishermen are seen raising their round nets from the disturbed waters of the Norrstrom, above them the trees are whipped by wind, whilst in the background the Opera House stands spotlit against the darkened, stormy sky.

On warm white simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. Evidence on previous mounting at extreme outer edges of sheet verso, otherwise very good original condition.
