During the late 1920's and early 30's, Frederick Carter turned towards portraiture and figure studies. He developed an innovative technique for creating form by emphasising simple outlines and creating shadow with short close diagonal hatching. This robust figure study shows the culmination of Frederick Carter's interest in developing structure in this way, his diagonal hatching technique having been elaborated to the full. The result is both modernistic and highly effective at rendering both contours and shadows. Walter Sickert can be found to have used a similar form of hatching for rather different purposes in many of his later etchings.

On warm white wove paper with full margins. Excellent condition.
