One of only 16 signed proofs printed in Bliss’s third state of the plate (Bliss later discovered an intermediate state and renamed this third state as the fourth state). A particularly fine signed proof impression. From Alphonse Legros’s own private collection; subsequently in the collection of Frank E. Bliss, author of the leading catalogue on the printed works of Alphonse Legros.

Alphonse Legros was fascinated by the effects of weather and many of his printed works were created purely to capture the atmospheric effects of a particular variety of weather condition. This plate depicting a farmstead at Chaillé-les-Marais is a brilliant example of the artist’s inspired plein air handling of natural light.

Provenance: Collection of Frank E. Bliss, Esq. and with his collector’s stamp at the lower right corner of the sheet.

On cream laid paper, with Pro Patria watermark, with full margins. Very fine original condition.
