Excellent impression with good strong line, printed with delicate plate tone. A signed proof from the only edition of 50 impressions published by Colnaghi in London in 1926.
This elaborate etching by Fred Richards shows London’s fashionable New Bond Street, busy with shoppers in the mid-1920’s, prior to the Great Depression. The view looks South with Herbert Johnson’s famous gentleman’s hat shop at no.38 on the far left; the first dark arched doorway on the left, with its pointed cover, is home to Sotheby’s auction house. The building with a dark, pointed ‘spire’ at the very centre of the image and those to the immediate right of it, no longer exist, having been replaced by modern office buildings with shops such as Burberry at street level.
Fred Richards was an outstanding architectural and topographical etcher. Fred Richards trained under Frank Short at the Royal College of Art, becoming elected Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1913 and a full member in 1921.
Fred Richards chose an impression of this etching as his exhibition piece at both the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers & Engravers in 1926.
On cream wove paper with full margins. Very fine original condition. |
