Brilliant signed presentation proof impression in the second state of the plate, with the image completed, but before the addition of some long hairs under the nostrils of the lion.
An outstanding proof impression, inscribed by the artist in pencil “To R.S.Large Nov 8.1938 Stephen Gooden A.R.A. 1936”. This original engraving was designed as the tailpiece for the 1936 Harrap edition of Aesop’s Fables – this is a rare independent proof impression, prior to the published book edition.
On cream wove paper with full margins and deckle edge. Evidence of previous mounting at extreme corners of sheet verso, otherwise very good original condition. |
