Original Arthur Briscoe etching.

Excellent impression from the only published edition of 75 signed and numbered proofs. All impressions of this etching sold out prior to publication in 1925 by subscription and the plate of this etching was destroyed immediately after this edition had been printed.

Arthur Briscoe delighted in portraying seafaring men whilst at work, often aloft amongst the rigging furling the sails. Arthur Briscoe’s first attempt at this subject was a horizontal plate which showed the scene from a much more conventional angle. Arthur Briscoe abandoned his first plate after only two trial proofs had been pulled, choosing instead this inspired vertical depiction of the seamen seen from above. This angle of view immediately achieves a sense of height and conveys the very real dangers which this kind of work involves.

On special greenish-toned laid paper with fleur-de-lys watermark, with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition.
