Original Augustus John etching.

Outstanding, rich impression, with strong line and carefully wiped plate tone. From the only published edition of 25 signed proofs, as issued by J. Knewstub in 1906. Signed by the artist in pencil “Aug. E. John”.

In his early portrait etchings, such as Old Arthy, Augustus John was directly inspired by the example of Rembrandt, making numerous etched studies of the strange old men of Liverpool, where he was teaching at the time. He studied these curious specimens of humanity with penetrating accuracy, portraying them in works using striking chiaroscuro with the dexterity of a natural master of etching.

Etched without commercial intent, as were all of Augustus John’s early plates, this etching was not published in a formal edition until issued by Knewstub through his Chenil Gallery in 1906, when this proof was printed. The plate was cancelled immediately after this edition had been printed.

On antique laid paper, watermarked GC & Co., with full margins and deckle-edge. Very faint time tone in outer margins, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent.
