Extremely rare early etching previously attributed to Thomas Gainsborough.
For many years this early etching, inscribed in the plate “Gainsbro 1760”, was ascribed to Thomas Gainsborough’s own hand. It was accepted by Hind but raised Shaw Sparrow’s suspicions and has been rejected as an original work by John Hayes. Hayes discusses this etching at some length on pages 7-8 of his leading reference work Gainsborough as Printmaker, concluding that it is the work of an unidentified “early nineteenth century etcher working in the Sandby tradition, reproducing either a lost Gainsborough subject or a subject thought at the time to be by Gainsborough”.
On cream wove paper with margins. Generally very good original condition. |
