Baroque Fountain, Dalmatia by Isabel de Bohun Lockyer

Baroque Fountain, Dalmatia   1933

  Original linocut, printed in colours.
Signed, titled, dated and numbered in pencil.
S 410 x 339 mm; I 356 x 255 mm
The artist’s number ‘1’ proof impression. Very good impression from the only edition of 25 signed and numbered proofs, with good, unfaded colours. One of Lockyer’s largest linocuts.

This proof was purchased in Lockyer’s original studio folder and was her own stock proof. Consequently, it has been handled as a working artist's impression but has never been framed or exposed to the light for prolonged periods – as a result, the colours are as first printed with no fade whatsoever.

Isabel de Bohun Lockyer was one of the few artists outside the Grosvenor School to use linocut for colour printmaking in England at this time. Printing in water-based inks, her linocuts have the appearance of colour woodcuts. A number of her works depict views in Switzerland and Dalmatia.

On soft simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. Upper margin of sheet torn away with a resulting loss at the upper right corner of the image. One tear in lower margin and creasing at extreme outer edges of sheet.
